Man Impersonates Police Officers in New Twist on Scam Calls in West Michigan

Stuart Miles/ThinkStock

The Kent County Sheriff’s Department is warning about a new twist on an old scam that is now showing up in West Michigan.

Not only are scammers calling victims, but they are also showing up on their doorsteps.

According to a news release, sheriff’s deputies were called Wednesday to a home in the on East Paris Avenue SE in Gaines Township on a fraud report.

The victim said that she had been contacted by phone by a woman who claimed she was attempting to collect a debt from the victim. The victim was told that if she didn’t pay immediately, a warrant would be issued for her arrest.

A short time later, a man arrived at her home claiming to be a detective with the Kent County Sheriff’s Department. The man told her to buy a prepaid credit card for the amount that she owed. She then went to a local store, purchased the card and returned to her home. The man was still waiting at the home when she returned. She gave him the numbers off the card and he left.

The suspect identified himself as Mark and was wearing a black business suit. He is described as having greying sideburns and a southern accent. He was last seen driving a black Dodge Charger-type vehicle with no markings.

The victim did not request to see any sort of police identification, and took the man’s word that he was a law enforcement officer.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Department and all local law enforcement do not conduct business in this manner, and will not ask you to purchase a prepaid credit card to pay off fines or fees.

Anyone with information is asked to call (616) 632-6100, extension 1.
