Mackinac Bridge To Turn Blue For Autism Awareness
Monday is Global Autism Awareness Day, and a popular Michigan landmark will be turning blue tonight to bring more awareness to the cause.
This is called "Light it Blue Michigan," and it's the first time the state is participating in this international event. Michigan has the fourth-largest number of autistic children in the U.S. (15,000 kids) and advocates hope that this will help bring light to those children.
Michigan Lt. Governor Brian Calley, who has a daughter with autism, will be the featured speaker at the ceremony. Calley has been pushing to expand health insurance coverage for autistic children, and Governor Rick Snyder is expected to sign a bill later this month to do just that.
The bridge project is being paid for by the non-profit Corner Pieces. MDOT will "Light it Blue" at sundown, and the bridge will stay blue the entire month of April.
