The Detroit Lions are a lot like what the Cubs were to baseball, the lovable losers of football (Buffalo Bills notwithstanding). But would you believe there are more Lions fans in Michigan than actual lions in the wild?

A somewhat unscientific survey, which we'll be reporting as stone cold fact, appeared on reddit recently determining if NFL teams have more or less fans than their namesake.

For instance, take the Arizona Cardinals. There are estimated to be about 4 million fans of the team. However there are 120 million cardinals.

On the other hand, there are about 5.6 million perennially disappointed Lions fans. But the global lion population is estimated at just 20,000 animals.

So consider that a point of pride, Lions fans. There are more of you than your team's namesake.

And for what it's worth, here are some groups concerned with helping maintain the world's lions: African Wildlife Foundation, Lion Guardians and LionAid.

Take a look at the whole study to see the teams with more or less fans their their mascots.
