Let’s End Daylight Saving Time… Actually, Let’s Just Never Fall Back

Close up of an office clock

Today marked the start of Daylight Saving Time. A time when we set our clocks ahead an hour which results in longer amounts of daylight each day.

I’m not going to try to sound super smart.. but here’s the deal:

According to Wikipedia, Daylight Saving Time (DST) started with Benjamin Franklin in 1784. He came up with idea so minimize the candle usage during the longer daylight hours of the summer. Later in the 1970’s it was again a big thing during the energy crisis.  It was said to save electricity costs across the nation. Now in recent years, that has been questioned and a few studies including one in Australia, again from Wikipedia, show there is no cost benefit, energywise.

On Sunday, as we all lost an hour of sleep, I woke to a LOT of Facebook and Twitter posts complaining about losing an hour, and how we should abolish DST.

Personally, I think we should abolish the “Standard” time. I hate in winter when it’s dark at 4:30pm, also now when kids are heading to school, it will be light… instead of sending kids to the bus stop in the dark. It was such a change for me to wake up near 8am and it’s still dark.

My question is, as everyone posted their problems with losing an hour is… Why do we want to go back to standard time? Are there any good reasons? If not, I say 100%, LET’S QUIT CHANGING OUR CLOCKS… but I don’t want to ever “fall back”, just let us either start an hour later or have the following Monday off, the final time we “spring forward.
