Katy Perry Tried, and Failed, to Trademark ‘Left Shark’

Since the 2015 Super Bowl halftime performance during which Katy Perry performed on stage with two dancers in shark costumes, her team has been attempting to capitalize on Left Shark, the shark who danced off beat and pretty much stole the show.

Well, good news for everyone, their attempt to trademark Left Shark has been denied!

Billboard reports that the investigator, David Collier has found that the design, "identifies only a particular character; it does not function as a service mark to identify and distinguish applicant’s services from those of others and to indicate the source of applicant’s services."

Basically, he's saying that he doesn't believe that people look at Left Shark and automatically think "Katy Perry".
