Josh’s Top 5 Awesome Moments of 2013 [Video]
An inspiring U.S. Marine from Michigan, screaming goats, return of a pastry, series finales and a bond built on tragedy.
It was a crazy year!
I would definitely give 2013 an “A” on my end of year report card. I was able to break my running goal, lose 25 pounds, and move to this amazing city to work for Channel 95-7. Pretty solid!
Personal achievements aside, there were some pretty awesome moments in 2013.
#5 “The Office” and “Breaking Bad”
We saw two of the best series finales in recent memory.
“The Office” is by far my favorite show. It seemed to have lost its steam in 2012, but came back strong for its final season, and offered some amazing quotes.
We also saw the incredible end to “Breaking Bad” on AMC. If I say anything more, I’ll ruin it for anyone who has yet to Netflix binge the series. All I will say is: “I did it for me.”
#4 Screaming Goats!
The screaming goats took over Youtube, and our hearts. Also, taught us that a screaming goat mixed with Taylor Swift will bring tears of laughter.
At the end of 2012, Hostess went bankrupt and ended production of Twinkies. People went nuts and ran to stores, as if there were some sort of apocalypse on the way, and drained shelves of the Twinkies. On July 15, 2013, the amazing cream-filled morsel of happiness returned to shelves.
#2 Coming Together After The Boston Marathon Bombing
In April of 2013 two pressure cooker bombs exploded at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three and injuring 264. The events leading up to the arrest of the bomber also killed a police officer and injured 16 others.
Days after, a lockdown in Watertown, Mass., and a manhunt with thousands of law enforcement officers finally led to the arrest of one bomber and the other, his brother, was killed.
The amazing part of this: Most of us watched the capture of the bomber play out on TV, Facebook and Twitter; and we also saw the beautiful coming together of Boston and our country. The cheering from the crowd that night when police were leaving the scene was amazing.
This picture really says it all.
#1 Lance Cpl. Myles Kerr
I’m way biased on this one because it happened up north in Charlevoix, about 20 minutes from the station that carried my show prior to coming here.
This story went viral after someone snapped a photo of Marine Lance Cpl. Myles Kerr at the Charlevoix Venetian Festival 5K. Kerr was running when he noticed a 9-year-old boy struggling to finish. Kerr dropped back to help motivate Brandon Fuchs, who had been separated from his group. Kerr finished with the slowest time in his age group, but inspired thousands.
Kerr was featured on ABC-TV’s “Good Morning America” and myriad other media outlets.
Responding to tweets of thanks, Kerr tweeted: “I was just doing what any man would do, but thank you!”
We had a pretty cool year in 2013. Here’s to a great 2014!
