It was an epic evening with Pearl Jam celebrating Detroit throughout.

Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder set the tempo and tone throughout the night, playing to crowd and showing he knows Detroit and Michigan.

He does. It was Pearl Jam's 12th concert in southeast Michigan, but it was the first time the band had played at Joe Louis Arena.

"Drinking the good stuff tonight!," said Vedder, holding up what looked like a bottle of wine.

It turned out the wine came from Detroit Red Wings great Chris Chelios.

Vedder told the throng that it "sounds great in here. (That's) probably because of all of the banners hanging in here. That's why every venue in Seattle sounds like shit."

Pearl Jam debuted in Seattle in 1990, with the sole major league sports title for the city in that time being the Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl victory this year. Meanwhile, Joe Louis Arena is home to the NHL's Red Wings, 11-time Stanley Cup champions, including titles in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008.

As part of the two encores, Pearl Jam played John Lennon's "Imagine" in the first set and Michigan rock band MC5's "Kick Out the Jams" and The Who's "Baba O'Riley" in the second set.
