Indy 500′s Amazing Finish

The 100th anniversary of the Indy 500 has brought us what many are calling the wildest finish ever.

Going into the last lap J.R. Hildebrand held the lead and was set to become the first rookie since 2001 to win the race.  With his crew beginning to celebrate, Hildebrand lost control on the final turn and hit the wall allowing Dan Wheldon to pass and claim victory.  Maybe.

The finish is being reviewed by race officials.  Sports Illustrated’s Bruce Martin explains:

Wheldon’s victory in the 100th Anniversary of the Indy 500 is being reviewed by IndyCar Series officials because Hildebrand’s car was able to cross the start/finish line under its own power.

The rules state that once the yellow light is turned on, the field is frozen. That means Hildebrand would still be the leader at the time of the caution period and because his car made it across the finish line, Wheldon’s race-winning pass could be wiped out.

Wow.  Maybe they can just call it a tie and have another race like Lightning McQueen did in Cars

Guess we’ll have to wait to see who REALLY won.

UPDATE:  ESPN reports Dan Wheldon has been declared the winner.
