True story.

I don't often think about this incident, but it popped into my mind yesterday after hearing Bush's "Machinehead". Let me explain.

Back in middle school, I would leave my tiny, sleepy UP town every summer for about a week and visit my cousin in "the city" (which was really more like a bigger town). On one such adventure, when I was 14 or 15, I met a boy, we'll call him Dave*. He was cute, and rebellious, and liked me, so we were relatively inseparable for a few days. The last afternoon that I was in town, we were hanging out at a friend's house, listening to music, generally being 14-year-olds, and we started kissing, as teenagers do (what is it that my Grandma calls it? Necking?). "Machinehead" played quietly in the background while we romantically(?) kissed in the living room.

The next morning, I went home, and while we sent a few letters back and forth (shut up, these were the pre-email, pre-Facebook, pre-texting days), I never saw him again.

A couple of years later, I got a phone call from my cousin, "You'll never believe what happened! Dave was just arrested!" I wasn't totally shocked, as he had toted himself as a "bad boy" when I met him, but if that was the end of the story, it wouldn't really be all that interesting.

It gets weirder.

Dave was convicted of the crimes for which he was arrested. But, that's not where the story ends.

While still incarcerated, he murdered someone. So, instead of being jailed for a couple of years for a few crimes, he's now in prison for life without parole. For murdering someone.

I guess this is a good conversation starter in certain situations. And hey, if I'm ever close to winning a game of "I've Never", this is my Hail Mary!

*His name was not Dave.
