If you were in downtown Grand Rapids on Saturday, you probably saw the crowd. Hundreds of people (estimated at close to 1,000) joined the march that took them from Martin Luther King, Jr. Park to Rosa Parks Circle, all to show their support of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old that was shot and killed in Florida on February 26.

Martin was shot as he was walking through a gated community by a neighborhood watch volunteer named George Zimmerman. Zimmerman has not been arrested for shooting Martin, and the case has caught the attention of people across the country.

A “Silent Hoodie March” organized by Grand Rapids Community College’s black student union is planned for 3:15 p.m. Wednesday at the corner of Lyon Street and Bostwick Avenue. Participants will travel to Rosa Parks Circle and back to the college’s Applied Technology Center. A rally will follow in the ATC Building with several student speakers.
