Storms have been brewing in the area for the past couple of days. In fact, just yesterday in Chicago they spotted a waterspout over Lake Michigan.

A waterspout on 28 September 2016, at about 8:30am. Looking straight east from the north side of Chicago (Edgewater).

As I'm still relatively new to the area, I did a little research on water spouts. And by research I mean I googled 'water spouts' and read the wiki article.

Apparently, you don't want to be near them in the water. Which makes sense. They're not as powerful as tornadoes, but they will occasionally suck up a bunch of fish/frogs/turtles and throw them 100 miles inland.
