Unless you live a very sheltered lifestyle, chances are you answered yes to this question. And if so, chances are you're entitled to money.

A class action lawsuit was filed against three companies (LG, NEC Corporation and Hitachi Maxell) for price-fixing lithium-ion batteries for over 10 years. This means that you, as a customer, paid more for any product that contained the battery.

A settlement was reached and the companies agreed to a $45 million payout. And for those whole file a claim, will be given a portion of that money.

According to the claim website, in order to file a claim you must meet these requirements:

  • Lived in the U.S. during time of purchase
  • Purchased an electronic device containing a lithium-ion battery and/or a replacement battery and
  • Purchases must have been made through January 1, 2000 to May 31, 2011.

Devices include:

  • Cell phones, including smart phones
  • Laptops
  • Tablets
  • Camcorders
  • Digital cameras
  • Cordless power tools
  • Audio player (MP3, iPod, etc)
  • Replacement batteries

Filing a claim is simple and doesn't require a receipt, just some memory on your end. You have until November 29th to file

People are expected to receive their refunds by February and March of next year. That amount is dependent on how many items you bought during that time frame. You can read more about the lawsuit here.

Just don't rely on it to make you rich. I'm still waiting on my $2 refund from StarKist tuna from a couple years ago.
