Grand River Flooding Potential

There is a huge potential this week for flooding along the Grand River.  So far in April, our area is over 3 inches ABOVE the average monthly rainfall of 1.65 inches.

The forecast for Thursday calls for rain in the morning and storms by afternoon, which could give us an additional 3 inches of rain.

As of Wednesday night at 9pm, downtown Grand Rapids was at 17.18 feet and Comstock Park was at 14.18 feet. The National Weather Service predicts we could see 22.4 feet downtown (major flood stage is 23 feet) and 18.35 feet at Comstock Park, which would be above the RECORD flood stage of 17.8 feet.  (NWS Flood Information is HERE for Grand Rapids, HERE for Comstock Park and HERE for Robinson Township in Ottawa County.)

Flooding already caused problems in Grand Rapids on Wednesday night, stranding cars on Division at 28th Street.  The next round of rain will make it a very concerning situation in West Michigan.

Here are a few pictures taken Wednesday night from Ah-Nab-Awen Park downtown.
