Those of us who live here in West Michigan know how great the Grand Rapids Fire Department is. Especially if we've ever had to use their services. But now, it's official!

The Insurance Services Office, which is a national group that rates fire departments across the US, has given Grand Rapids a  “Class 2” rating, which makes it the highest rated in the state.

The Insurance Services Office is a subsidiary of Versik Analytics which maintains the largest insurance database in the world that relates to a fire department’s readiness to respond to fires.  Chief Laura Knapp told Fox 17 that the city dedicated many hours to the evaluation this summer.

Knapp also said the GRFD was rated Class 3 in 1996, which put them in the top 5 percent in the nation.
