Grand Rapids Breaks February 1 Snowfall Record with 8.8 Inches [Video]

Remember that snowstorm we had in January?

Well, the Super Bowl Sunday-Groundhog Day snowstorm was just as bad with gusting winds, sub-zero wind chills and plenty of snow.

Snowfall totals from the snowstorm hitting greater Grand Rapids and West Michigan in some locales piled up more than a foot of the white, fluffy stuff, according to the National Weather Service's Grand Rapids Office.

Grand Rapids set a new daily Feb. 1 snowfall record with 8.8 inches on Sunday, breaking the old mark of 6.1 inches set in 2011.

Other snowfall totals reported through 7:44 a.m. EST this morning included:

• 20 inches in Kalamazoo.
• 18 inches in Battle Creek.
• 18 inches four miles southwest of Hastings.
• 14 inches near Delton.
• 13 inches in Jenison.
• 12.5 inches in Hastings.
• 11 inches just north of Holland.
• 10.5 inches in Kentwood.
• 9.1 inches in Grand Rapids.
• 7 inches in Greenville.
• 6.2 inches in Big Rapids.
• 5.8 inches in Allendale.

Highest winds reported during the storm were:

• 43 miles per hour at Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids.
• 42 mph in Jamestown Township.
• 41 mph in Holland's harbor.
• 39 mph at Ionia County Airport near Ionia.
• 39 mph at Muskegon County Airport in Muskegon.
• 36 mph at West Michigan Regional Airport in Holland.
• 32 mph at Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport.
• 30 mph at Fremont Municipal Airport.

According to Michigan State Police, local sheriff's and police departments, the Michigan Department of Transportation and local and county road commissions and the National Weather Service, rural roads up and down the Lakeshore are snow-covered with some drifting.

High temperatures today will be in the teens with most of the snow done, although another snow event is on the way Tuesday.
