A 15-year-old boy from Grand Haven is in Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids today after something went wrong while he was attempting to ignite a homemade bomb Tuesday afternoon.

According to our media partners at WZZM 13, the blast happened around 2:45pm on Tuesday on Lakeshore Drive. The boy was reportedly alone in his yard when he tried to ignite the homemade bomb, it blew up seemingly in his hands and blew open a gate to the yard.

A neighbor heard the blast, and told reporters that she thought that it was a car accident. When she rand outside, she realized it was something completely different. The neighbor told WZZM, "It was horrible," but refused to comment further.

The teen suffered serious burns when black powder ignited. He sustained wounds to his chest, arms, hands and face, and was taken by ambulance to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Neighbors told reporters that the boy loved to build and repair things, and was quite good at it. The extent of the boy's injuries is unknown at this time, and the incident is under investigation.
