The Genesee County Board of Commissioners voted 7-2 on Tuesday, to pass a resolution that prohibits the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21.

Those who support the move believe that it will cut down on tobacco use in the county. There is a 90 day period before this resolution will be enforced.

Genesee County isn't the first place in Michigan to raise the minimum age for purchasing tobacco products. Ann Arbor passed a similar ordinance in August.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette has said that Ann Arbor can't ban the sale of tobacco to folks between the ages of 18 and 20. The ordinance conflicts with state law, and state law preempts local law.
