Four Michigan Cities Listed In The ‘Top 10 Most Dangerous’ List For 2013

Curiosity Aroused has released their yearly list of the top 10 most dangerous cities in America and four Michigan cities have made the list. The list is compiled based on FBI data of the number of violent crimes in each US city with 25,000 or more people and official census data. There are no West Michigan cities on the list (which is good), but the east side of the state is apparently riddled with dangerous places where you probably wouldn’t want to take your kids.

Flint popped up on the list again this year at number three, because a resident’s chances of becoming victim of either violent or property crime is 1 in 11 and their chances of being a victim of a violent crime are 1 in 42. What are the chances you’ll be a victim of property crime? 1 in 15. Also, roughly 1 out of every 130 people in Flint risk having their car stolen.

Coming in at number five on the list is a place that isn’t all that far from Flint. Saginaw is listed right in the middle of the top 10 because people have a 1 in 16 chance of falling victim to either property-related or violent crimes.

Right after Saginaw, we see Detroit coming in at number six on the list. Detroit gets flack for a lot of reasons, but it lands on this list because it has a per capita violent crime rate of 1348 per 100,000 citizens, and an overall crime rate of 8400 per 100,000 residents. Detroit has one of the highest car theft rates in all of the United States, with 1 in 62 residents experiencing a car theft every year.

And coming in at number ten on the list is good old Inkster, Michigan. Why? Well because, the reported violent crime rate was 1282 per 100,000 residents, compared with the national average of 241 per 100,000. Inkster residents have a 1 in 55 chance of being victim of a violent crime.
