Grand Rapids' Founders Brewing Co. now has an international investor.

Founders announced Wednesday that Mahou San Miguel brewery in Spain, will be their new partner.

Mahou San Miguel brewery was founded in Madrid in 1890 and is a leading Spanish brand.

In a full statement, co-founders Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers explain that it is important to them that Founders becomes a multi-generational brewery with roots in the culture that they have built in Grand Rapids.

In order to continue their expansion (in terms of their actual facility in Grand Rapids and in terms of distribution of their beer to different locations, including internationally) they felt it best to bring a partner on-board.

According to WZZM-13, Mahou will be a minority investor with 30% ownership in the brewery.

The co-founders reassure beer enthusiasts that Founders will remain Founders:

Nothing will change—well, not any more that it does in a usual month at Founders, during a facility expansion, no less. We are committed to growing here in Grand Rapids. The brewery will stay here, and our beers will not change—though we'll keep innovating. The entire Founders Family will stay intact. In fact, we'll continue to grow the Founders Family as we have been for the past handful of years.
