Five Things I Should Give Up For Lent – But Won’t

Francesco Cura/ThinkStock

It’s that time of year again! Lent! This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, and for all of the good Catholics out there, it’s the time to give up something that means a lot to them (as a form of penance? I honestly don’t know what Lent is about other than giving up things. Do people who aren’t Catholic do it?) So, it got me to thinking: if I were, in fact, Catholic, what would I give up? I came up with a pretty good list, I think. But, I won’t be giving up any of these things any time soon.

Reality Television

As much as I talk about how much I hate reality TV, I kind of love it. I mean, I don’t love ‘Toddlers & Tiaras’ in a “Oh my gosh! It’s the best show on television!” kind of way. But, I have to watch it every time I see it.

Same goes for “Keeping Up With The Kardashians”, “Teen Mom”, “My Strange Addiction”, and pretty much any other show that I can watch in marathon form.

It was actually suggested to me that I give up texting for Lent.

There’s a catch with that one. I could give up texting with my friends, maybe. And even my family. But, I can’t give it up when it comes to work.

Plus, does anyone really talk on the phone any more? I’m pretty sure the only person that I talk on the phone to on a regular basis is my mother. Who doesn’t know how to text. Hell, she hasn’t even set up her voicemail on her cell phone and she’s had it for 5 years.

Talking S*&%

Oh, don’t get all judge-y on me now and pretend that you don’t do it, too. Especially, if you’re a girl.

We judge. We all judge. And, we judge everyone. We judge our friends, our co-workers, random strangers on the street… We judge all of them. Why? Who knows? It’s not that we’re doing it to be mean, or spiteful. It’s not even like we’ll always come out and say what we’re thinking! But, we will always, always judge people. We will judge them based on their clothing choices, the volume of their voice, and even their grammar.

Why can’t I give this up for lent? Because it’s kind of fun, that’s why.

Social Media

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Tumblr… There are so many social networks out there.

I know that there are people who share way too much information on Facebook. I know that there are people out there that Tweet every fifteen seconds. I know that there are people who use Tumblr just to post pictures of their faces fifty-three times a day. Those people need to give up social media for Lent.

Me? Yeah, maybe I could spend less time on the world wide web, but honestly, I don’t think that it’s something that I enjoy. It’s just something that I do. And, another thing that I have to use for work.

Drinking, Smoking, Swearing, and All Other “Wrong” Things

Nope. Won’t do it.

I’m not saying that I drink like a fish, smoke like a chimney, or cuss like a sailor. What I am saying is that I’m not giving those things up. For Lent or anything else.
