For job interviews, it used to be enough to just show up in a nice suit, answer some perfunctory questions and be on your way.

But these days, some companies have changed the interview process so much that candidates wind up feeling as though they’re trying out for a reality TV show instead of simply vying for a 9-5 paycheck.

The Los Angeles Times calls the trend “extreme interviewing,” and cites the example of one company that made internship hopefuls write 13 different 140-character messages on Twitter to illustrate why they should be chosen for the gig.

In addition, other interviewees are now often asked questions for which there is no right answer, like, “If Germans were the tallest people in the world, how would you prove it?” or “On a scale of 1 to 10, how weird are you?”

The popular Pinkberry chain even asks potential hires to act out fake commercials and come up with marketing plans for hypothetical new products — and that’s just for a job scooping frozen yogurt. In a statement, the company said such exercises “allow us to see immediate impact on team connectedness, demonstrate service and leadership skills and unveil entrepreneurial spirit.”

Bottom line: the next time you have an interview, keep in mind that while you probably won’t have to eat anything icky in ‘Fear Factor’ style, you may very well have to prove your worth in a variety of bizarre ways.

At Atlanta pizzeria is receiving both cheers — and jeers — for the notice it recently printed on its menus asking parents of noisy children to take their kids outside.

After Donnie Parmer, co-owner of Grant Central Pizza, got an abundance of complaints (both in person and on the review site Yelp) about screaming or unruly children in his restaurant, he added the following notice to the bottom of his menus:

Dear all present and future patrons: GCP is proud of its reputation as a family restaurant, a title that we will work to keep. Unfortunately a number of our diners have posted unpleasant experiences because of crying and unsupervised children. To ensure that all diners have an enjoyable lunch or dinner with us we respectfully ask that parents tend to their crying tots outside.”

Parmer says that while he likes kids and Grant Central Pizza is a family establishment, it’s not fair for little ones to disrupt the entire dining room. He cites an incident in which a child hit an adult patron in the head with a toy as the last straw that made him print the public notice.

While some parents are offended, saying “noise is just part of the experience in a family restaurant,” other customers applauded the gesture and said it’ll make them more likely to visit the restaurant.

Rick Silva, the head of Checkers and Rally’s drive-in restaurants was featured on the latest episode of ‘Undercover Boss.’ Like the other sneaky bosses before him, the CEO donned a disguise and pretended he was just a lowly employee, in this case at a Checkers’ franchise in Homestead, Florida. And it was also the first case of a boss breaking his cover and shutting down the workplace on the spot. 

During his undercover stint, Silva became bothered by the restaurant’s managers treatment of a fry cook named Todd. Not only did the manager, known only as “Stevens,” berate Todd harshly, but he threatened to take the employee outside and beat him if he didn’t work harder.

Shocked by Stevens’ tone, Silva asked to speak with him outside. First, Stevens explained that he had to scream at his staff or they wouldn’t listen. Then he began to question why Silva had the right to question him on how he handles his workers.

Silva tried to remain in character, but when Stevens continued to press him on his credentials he finally snapped

“I have been in the restaurant business for over 20 years. And I’ve been in the fast food business for over 20 years. I’m CEO for this company,” Silva explained.

Stevens was understandably crestfallen by this revelation. Silva was so angry about what he had seen that he shut the restaurant down on the spot. But don’t worry, it was reopened the next day with a new manager, so nobody lost their job. In fact, Silva even retained Stevens, who was ordered to undergo more job training. A new Nielsen poll finds smartphones are becoming less of a luxury and more of a so-called necessity — at least for younger people.

Nielsen gathered data to learn more about the age, income and demographics of the typical US smartphone user. Specifically, the firm wanted to know if lower prices are making the devices more popular among those who earn less money.

Turns out more than half of people between 18 and 24 who make less than $15,000 per year are smartphone owners, compared to 43 percent of those aged 25 to 34 and just 31 percent of folks between 35 and 44 years old.

While researchers don’t know if the people surveyed, especially those in the younger group, have outside financial help (parents, spouses, etc.), it’s clear that even the respondents on limited budgets are making room for smartphone ownership.

But what researchers found most interesting is that although the younger set deems the devices a necessity, older people consider them more of a luxury — which is valuable information for developers, publishers and advertisers.

We knew it was never going to last forever. Charlie Sheen is back at it again, in his crazy outspoken self, after butting heads with Warner Bros over the use of certain pictures of him from his “Two and a Half Men” days. WB sent some boring legal letters to Charlie saying they couldn’t use them to promote his new TV show Anger Management.

Then, all hell broke loose… Charlie called up TMZ to tell them how he really felt about his old show saying – “I’m tired of lying, I’m tired of pretending the show doesn’t suck. I’m tired of pretending Ashton doesn’t suck, It’s nothing personal, I just feel bad for him. He’s saddled with such bad writing. Just when he’d almost convinced people he was back to being professional.” - Wow Charlie, tell us how you really feel… when you put the bottle down.

Remember when being bullied, picked on or being called ugly at school meant it ONLY happened at school? Then, you could (mostly) forget it when you went home? Now kids have Facebook where others taunt and harass them, write nasty things and call them ugly.

The latest trend for esteem-challenged tweens and teens is to post a video on You Tube and ask “Am I Ugly?” (See the videos below.)

One of these videos has over 14,000 views; it got a bunch of responses, ranging from pretty nasty to relatively wise. Another asked people to comment whether they thought she was pretty or ugly, saying “I don’t care if I’m ugly or not.” The girl who posted is black and she received some pretty disgusting comments.

This new trend is either an attempt to gain validation from people they don’t know, or a way to feign apathy toward those who would put them down. Either way, it makes me wonder how many more kids will kill themselves because of the cruel, nasty words of society.

It’d be nice if “civilization” were to finally become civilized again, wouldn’t it?

The world will finally get a taste of the highly anticipated ‘Birthday Cake’ remix. Rihanna snagged former flame Chris Brown to feature on the track, much to the chagrin of the brass. While we can’t speak for their potential romantic reunion, their musical one may not be such a bad idea.

The ‘Birthday Cake’ remix is three times the length of the original brief ‘Talk That Talk’ track. The raunchy bedroom anthem is extra steamy considering the couple’s rollercoaster history. Based on rampant rumors of their downlow hookups, when Breezy sings, “Girl I wanna f— you right now / It’s been a long time / I’ve been missing your body,” you believe him.

Rihanna is just as reminiscent, rapping, “Remember how you did it? / Remember how you fed it? / You still wanna kiss it? / C-C-Come and get it.”

Breezy’s own ‘Turn Up the Music’ remix was released today, also featuring RiRi. While critics and fans were both wary of the collaborations (and understandably so), from a purely musical standpoint, they duo makes an effective team.

Whether you believe or agree with the allegations of a reignited romantic flame, the heat between these two is undeniable. We blame the birthday candles.

My first CD ever, who knew it would have one of the greatest songs on it? Some will say, including myself, that “Smells Like Teen Spirit”  is responsible for alternative rock entering the mainstream in the 90′s. It was Nirvana’s first and biggest hit, reaching number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and placing high on music industry charts all around the world in 1991 and 1992.

Chris Brown wished former (and possibly current) flame Rihanna a happy birthday in a very public way: on Twitter. Not only did Breezy wish Robyn (Rihanna’s real first name) well, he also released his ‘Turn Up the Music’ remix on her special day — and she’s featured on it. On the remix, RiRi sings the second verse and joins Brown on the hook. While it can be argued that their personal lives may not entangle well together, they certainly make good music together. The duo announced the remix on Twitter, with Rihanna posting the link with the message, “@chrisbrown Turn up the music remix #RihannaNavy #TeamBreezy enjoy!!!”

Brown’s remix comes hot on the heels of a publicized possible reunion for the notorious volatile former couple. Brown and Rihanna reportedly spent four hours together in her dressing room during Grammy rehearsals and have been sending loved up tweets to one another for ages now. Rumors have been rampant since January that they’ve been hooking up on the sly — something Brown’s girlfriend, Karrueche Tran, denies.

‘Turn Up the Music’ isn’t the only music the pair will be making together. Breezy is the feature on RiRi’s upcoming ‘Birthday Cake’ remix, a decision that came under massive backlash from both fans and critics alike.

First of all, let me set the record straight by saying that I had no idea that Chris Brown even had a girlfriend. And, after the drama that went down between Chris and Rihanna, I’m quite surprised that he’s able to even get a girlfriend. But, alas, it turns out that he’s dating a woman named Karrueche Tran. And, she’s not upset that people keep saying that Brown and Rihanna are back together.

According to sources that talked to TMZ, the couple is stronger than ever! And living together!

You may be thinking to yourself, “Didn’t I just hear that Chris was  at Rihanna’s birthday party?” Yes, yes you did. But, have no fear, that doesn’t bother Tran, either! Nope! Because as soon as Chris got back from the party, he took Tran away to Miami to celebrate Valentine’s Day (because nothing says “romance” like South Beach?”.

Even if Chris and Rihanna are still hooking up, a friend of theirs’ insists that it isn’t serious and won’t lead to long-term romance. Besides, it would take a lot for Chris to cover up that tattoo on his arm of Tran’s face.

The design was supposed to help parents give accurate doses by limiting the amount of medication that could be drawn into a plastic dosing syringe.  There there were problems with that syringe pushing a protective cover into the bottle.

IMPORTANT: This is NOT a life-threatening recall.  There have been NO life-threatening events because of this and the chance of a medical emergency is nearly non-existent.

You can continue using Infant Tylenol if the flow restrictor at the top of the bottle has remained in place.

They were detailing and debunking some pretty common myths that we all – me included – had about rights at work; things like asking about your family or religion in an interview or thinking that your boss has to have a justifiable reason for firing you.  A few interesting things here…

• It’s NOT illegal for an interviewer to ask about your religion, origin, relationship status or family.  What IS illegal is hiring – or not hiring – someone based on those answers.
• Former employers are allowed to tell future employers everything relevant to your performance, so long as it’s factually accurate.
• You can’t sue a company because your boss is a general jerk.  It’s legal for them to be a total jerk.  You CAN sue if they are being a jerk based on your religion, gender, race, etc.
• Your company CAN require you to attend work-related events outside of work hours. If you’re an hourly employee, you must be paid for the time required to take part in these things.
• There is no “warning” required before you are fired.  This is true even if you’ve been praised for doing a great job right up until the day they terminate you.
• Your boss does NOT have to have a justifiable reason to fire you.  You can be fired for any reason, so long as that reason isn’t because of race, religion, gender, etc.

See?  There were at least a few things there that I was wrong about (the interview questions and the reference check, for instance).  Hope this helps, whether you’re the employee or employer!

Stephen Colbert is back! Last week, on February 15th and 16th, fans of ‘The Colbert Report’ were surprised and concerned by an abrupt suspension of new episodes due to a “family emergency.” However, the master of news satire will be picking up where the he left off on Monday night with special guest Parnassus Books owner Ann Patchett.

When The Wall Street Journal reported the show’s hiatus, many assumed that Colbert’s 91-year-old mother, Lorena, was going through some health-related issues. Even without definitive confirmation, the Colbert nation came together, offering its thoughts and prayers to the beloved leader and his family.

The Colbert family is reportedly a very private and close-knit group, but in response to his fan’s overwhelming show of support, Stephen did have this to say on his Twitter page:

Hopefully, this will be the only unplanned Colbert hiatus that we’ll have to endure. We certainly commend him, though, for making family his number one priority and we wish him and his loved ones the best during this tumultuous time.

Special guests for this week include Author Robert Kagen on Tuesday, former Speaker of the House Nanci Pelosi on Wednesday, and opera star Placido Domingo on Thursday.
