Two separate groups are attempting to bring more casinos to Michigan.  Both groups have targeted Grand Rapids as one of the cities they would like to bring a casino to.

Do you want a casino in Grand Rapids?

Citizens for More Michigan Jobs and Michigan Is Yours are both circulating petitions to put the idea of more casinos on this November's ballot.  The State of Michigan has approved the petitions.  The organizations must now collect about 323,000 signatures by July 9 to get the proposal on the ballot.

Citizens for More Michigan Jobs has proposed the old Sligh Furniture building, at 221 Logan Street SW near Wealthy Street and 131, as their Grand Rapids casino location.

Protect MI Vote is among the groups opposed to the project.

Interesting quote from Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell a couple of months ago at mlive.com:

I am not a fan of casinos, but I’m a fan of Grand Rapids and I feel like, just from a defensive posture, if we’ve got casinos popping up all around us, we may have to have one here in Grand Rapids.

WZZM has more on the casino proposals.
