The Detroit Tigers are in first place and battling to stay there.  One of the big reasons they are in first place is Justin Verlander.  He has been one of the top pitchers in Major League Baseball this year and he proved why today.

Today's game between the Tigers and Angels featured two of the American League's top pitchers and early contenders for the Cy Young award:  Justin Verlander and Jered Weaver.

A pitcher's duel was expected and that's exactly what fans got as the Tigers won 3-2 and Justin Verlander was just four outs away from his third career no-hitter.  Verlander walked 2 and struck out 9.  He pitched 8 innings and gave up his only hit with 2 outs in the 8th inning.

Verlander threw a no-hitter earlier this season in Toronto on May 7, he also threw a no-hitter against Milwaukee on June 12, 2007.

Verlander fell short of the no-hitter today, but at this point you have to wonder, how many more will he get?
