Demi Lovato has been sober for five years, but she's not easing up on her healthy lifestyle any time soon.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the UCLA Open Mind Gala Wednesday (March 22), where the "Confident" singer was honored with the Artistic Award of Courage, Lovato shared how important—and life-saving—staying sober really is for her.

"What keeps me on this path is there's a drive that I have to stay sober because I know that my life depends on it," she said. "If I would have continued down that road, I don't know if I'd be here today. So it's something that's very important to me."

The pop star added that while her own sobriety obviously saved her life, she feels it also may have helped others on their own paths to wellness.

"I've been able to share my story with other people, and I've had fans that come up to me and tell me, 'Because you got sober, I got sober,'" Lovato revealed. "It's just been a really beautiful thing."
