A corrections officer from the Michigan Reformatory in Ionia is recovering after being shoved down the stairs.

WOOD-TV reports the incident occurred around noon on Thursday when a nurse requested assistance from officers due to an inmate becoming aggressive. The inmate allegedly then pushed one of the officers down a flight of stairs. The officer hit his head on the concrete floor and was flown to the hospital.

The injuries to the officer are not life threatening, but he could have been killed according to officials. Doctors say he cracked his skull and is bleeding from the brain.

The inmate was quickly moved to segregation and then moved to another prison. Michigan State Police are investigating.
