James Holmes, the alleged gunman in the  Aurora, Colo, movie theater shootings was back in court today. The former doctorate student was formally charged with 24 counts of murder and 116 counts of attempted murder for the July 20th attack during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises, in which 12 people died and another 58 were injured.

NBC reports that Holmes faces double charges for each murder:  One count of 1st degree "murder with deliberation" and another count of 1st degree murder of "extreme indifference to the value of human life" for each victim.

The defendant was also charged with one count of illegal possession of explosives. Authorities say he had booby trapped his apartment.

Holmes spoke only once during the hearing today, saying "yes" to waive his right to a preliminary hearing within 35 days, according to a tweet by Denver Post courts reporter John Ingold.
