UPDATE (1:20pm): Authorities have confirmed that it was, in fact, a lone gunman who had been laid off from his job a year ago. He killed one former co-worker before being killed himself in a fire exchange with police. Nine others were shot and wounded, but all are expected to recover. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg identified the shooter as Jeffrey Johnson, 53, armed with a .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol.

 

UPDATE (12:00pm): Authorities are now saying that 10 people were shot outside of the Empire State Building this morning. Two people have died, including the gunman. Federal officials are stressing that this was not an act of terrorism, but that it is likely workplace related.

 

Several news sources are reporting a shooting this morning outside of the Empire State Building in New York City.

CNN.com reports that a spokesperson from the New York Fire Department told them that as many as five people were shot.

Authorities swarmed the building shortly after 9am Friday after reports of gun fire.
