Summer in Michigan is full of great traditions including many nights spent around the campfire, but the way we enjoy campfires is Michigan is set for a major change.

We all know it's important to take careful care of a campfire. Dry conditions and wind can make for a dangerous situation, but that's not the only risk. Campfire wood brought to campsites can promote the spread invasive insects and diseases such as oak wilt and the emerald ash borer.

The Michigan DNR is introducing new requirements for all campfires at Michigan state parks and DNR-managed land. Starting in 2018, all firewood must either be bought at the park from an approved vendor OR be certified as heat-treated for emerald ash borer.

It's a big change, but one that is designed to protect the parks we love so much.
