Janna

I grew up in South Haven, Michigan.  Gotta love the lakeshore. Still feel a yearning for the beach, pretty much daily.  Moved to Grand Rapids to go to Calvin College. Fell in love with GR and have been here since! (Go Beer City USA!)   Big fan of crime TV, the '90s (scrunchies! Saved By the Bell!), my own rude and feisty cat, the beach (you may have thought I covered that already, but I really really love it, OK?), reading,  people watching, drinking on patios, playing the most inappropriate cards in Cards Against Humanity, and my dear dear family.

Woman Single Handedly Stops Creepy Flasher (Video)

Luckily, I have never been in a situation in which I am getting flashed. While I'm not entirely sure how I'd respond to a creeper exposing his genitals, I probably would not have balls (no pun intended) like the 24-year-old woman in Boston who literally grabbed a flasher and held him until police arrived. Talk about girl power!

Cute Toddler Avoids Chores with “It’s Too Heavy!” Act (Video)

Kids having meltdowns usually aren't adorable. I'm not a parent, but I can imagine it could be rather irritating, not to mention embarrassing if you're in public. That said-- the fit 3 year old Kirsten throws to get out of helping clear the table might be the exception. Seriously, check out these acting skills!

The “Michigan Accent”– It Exists!

A man approached me in a gas station this past week, asking for directions. I got about 3 words out of my mouth before he interrupted me with: "Do you have an accent?" Taken aback, I said, "Uhhh... I don't think so?" He explained he was from California and totally thought I had a "Michigan accent". I smiled and finished giving him directions but secretly thought, "I don't have an accent you weirdo, you do." I think it's pretty common for those of us native to Michigan to think we don't have an accent and it's everyone else who sounds funny. Well, I came across a blog that breaks down the Michigan accent. After trying out a few of the examples I can totally hear it... Fellow Michiganders, we do have an accent! And, some pretty odd slang terms too.

Epic Marriage Proposal Video

I've got a thing with marriage proposals-- they just make me all weepy and sentimental. Hey, for some people it's Hallmark commercials or sappy love songs. Well, I get a little misty over "Will you Marry Me?" This video is no exception. Yes, it is over-the-top impressive with a dance-floor single, a marching band, slick costume changes and super tight choreographed moves-- but what gets me is how much this guy must love his partner to go to all this trouble!

8-Year-Old Uses App to Solve Crime (Video)

After his family's Tennessee  home was burglarized, 8-year-old Landon Crabtree decided to do something about it. Among the items taken were two iPads. The clever kid did some  internet searching and found an app that would help him locate his stolen property. A modern day Encyclopedia Brown, right? (Side note: those  who get that reference may also  appreciate Wendy's recent blog about The Babysitter's Club.)

Poll of the Day: Does ‘Hunger Games’ Live Up to the Hype?

My fb friends seem to be pretty much split down the middle on "The Hunger Games". Comments range from "Wayyy too long. Over it." to "Best. Movie. Ever." It's certainly doing well at the box office-- Reuters reports the film brought in $155 million in estimated U.S. and Canadian weekend ticket sales. That makes it the third-highest domestic opening in history, ranking only behind  last summer's "Harry Potter" finale and the 2008 Batman flick " The Dark Knight."

Cute or Creepy? Old Folks Get Crazy with Camera App

Babies better watch out-- old people can make cute videos too! Or creepy ones... I'm kind of on the fence with the video making its way around the internet of some seniors who got a hold of Apple's Photo Booth app for their computers' built-in cameras. I mean, they're reaaaally having a good time with it. Check  it out  after the jump.

Politically Correct Prinicipal Wants to Change Name of St. Patty’s Day

Happy "O'Green Day"! Really doesn't have the same ring to it, does it? Lisa Curtin, an elementary school principal in Massachusetts renamed St. Patrick's Day to "O'Green Day" to make it "inclusive and diverse" for all the students at Soule Road School. How politically correct of her! Parents of students at the school, however, think she might be taking things a little too far.

March is Top Month for Divorce

Happy "Divorce Month"! Let's... celebrate? According to the legal website FindLaw, for the past few years, searches for  "divorce" and related terms like  "family law" and "child custody" spiked in January and continued to rise through March, with actual divorce filings peaking during this month. Why all the breaking up this time of year?

Website Helps You Sell All The Crap Your Ex Left Behind

Break ups are hard enough. What makes them even worse is when your awful ex leaves behind all his crap. Staring at your former lovers belongings is a constant reminder of what once was  and now is no longer. Sure, you could give it to charity, or just go ahead and purge it. I've even known some particularly pissed off exes who held bonfire celebrations-- with the kindling being their former partner's old stuff.  And what do you do with the stuff he gave you that you no longer want? Sure, you might be fine with throwing away some things like the stuffed penguin he won you at the fair before he turned into the biggest jerk ever... but what about that engagement ring? Eeeek. Well, there's a new website that helps you get rid of  all the stuff from your past relationship and turn a profit.
