Janna

I grew up in South Haven, Michigan.  Gotta love the lakeshore! Still feel a yearning for the beach, pretty much daily.  Moved to Grand Rapids to go to Calvin College. Fell in love with GR and have been here since! (Go Beer City, USA!)   Big fan of crime TV, the '90s (scrunchies! Saved By the Bell!), my own rude and feisty cat, the beach (you may have thought I covered that already, but I really really love it, OK?), reading,  people watching, drinking on patios, playing the most inappropriate cards in Cards Against Humanity, and my dear, dear family.

Top 10 Best Cities For Families

So I'm not there yet, but at some point in the next 100 hundred years I'm going to start to think about raising a family. While my cat, Money Bags, and I are pretty mobile now and we could live just about anywhere, when the time comes, things like school district and low crime rate will play a role in the decision of where to settle my family. MSN Lifestyle has compiled a helpful list of the best cities for families in 2011.

Rock- Eating Pug Wins Outrageous Award

There are many reasons I don't own a dog. Mostly,  they just seem like a lot of work and money. Or as my brother said last weekend, "You just don't have the heart to be a dog owner." I was offened at first, then I realized that's a pretty true statement. Well, if I needed any more reasons, Harley, a pug from Rhode Island, has just given me one-- he ate over 100 rocks and then pooped them out. And now, he's getting an award.

Real Housewives Drama: 4 Fired, 1 “Kidnapped”

The drama continues for the Real Housewives' franchise and its stars. Last month, the suicide of Beverly Hills Housewives' husband Russell Armstrong  made headlines, along with speculation about how Bravo would handle the upcoming season. In the news this week-- 4 New York Housewives have gotten the axe. Bravo announced Saturday that Jill Zarin, Alex McCord, Cindy Barshop, and Kelly Bensimon will not be returning for season 5 of the hit show. Perhaps the strangest RH buzz was the "kidnapping" of  DC Housewife Michaele Salahi.

Is College Worth It? (Video)

Not going to college really wasn't an option in my family. It's what you did after high school. We all grew up hearing that college was the way to succeed- to get a good job, to make more money. But in today's economy, does that still ring true? With the brutal job market and student loan debt now surpassing credit card debt in the US, is college still a good investment?

High School Bans Makeup and Removes Mirrors

I'm pretty minimalistic when it comes to makeup. I'll tell you what though, I look like a freak without mascara; with blonde-tipped lashes, it's just mandatory. I don't think I'd take it too well if any authority figure told me I couldn't wear makeup-- especially back  in high school, when I first realized my eyelash problem. Recently, a high school in Britian did ban makeup and even went so far as to take the mirrors out of the girl's bathrooms.

Break In at Celine Dion’s: Breaking & Entering… & Bathing?

Dumb criminal stories are always great, and even better when they involve celebrities.  This past week Montreal police arreseted a man for breaking into Celine Dion's home in Laval, Quebec. Did he trash the place? Steal all her valuables? Well, if snacks from the fridge are considered valuable, then yes.

Top Song of Summer 2011 (video)

I don't know about you, but I definitely use music to mark periods in my life. The summer I listened to Dashboard Confessional's "The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most"  album non-stop will forever live on in summertime-epic-dreaminess/awesomeness (Hey, I was 18, and that's the perfect description for it). The fall when Dixie Chicks'  "Not Ready to Make Nice" made an uncountable number of plays on my iPod? Yeah, not so great. So when we look back on the summer of 2011, what will be "the song" that defined it? According to Billboard Magazine, several Channel 957 artists' songs are in the running.

Give up Shopping for a Year? One Woman Did!

So I may have had a bit of a shopping problem this week. See, my brothers' birthdays are coming up, so I needed to make a trip the mall... and while I'm picking out their gifts, I happened to find some awesome jeans on sale. And 2 cute cardigans. And 7 pairs of flip flops. Let's just say that after the trip to Target, in which I was only supposed to get wrapping paper, and ended up with a bill totaling over $100 (who can just go to Target and get one thing, really?)-- I was having some buyer's remorse. I remember previously hearing about a woman who'd given up shopping for a year, at the time thinking, yeah sure, I could do that. (Um, after this past week of splurging, maybe not.) Well, it turns out Elizabeth Jayne Liu's year is up.

Is Facebook Bumming You Out?

Paging through the latest issue of Cosmo, an article caught my eye: "Is Facebook Bumming You Out?" Meh... mostly just irritating the crap out of me. Yeah, I've  got some beef with Facebook:  The vaugebooking (Attention seeking status updates like "Wishing things would get better..." that absolutely beg for "What's going on? Are you OK?!" comments); the passive-aggression (Usually combined with vaugebooking, a post might read "Why is it that some people just can't be trusted?" Really? How about you have a real conversation with the untrustworthy jerk rather than fake pondering about it on fb?); the "spiritual quotes" (We get it, you're so deep)-- Oh, I could go on. But, aside from minor irritations, can Facebook really be a downer? According to Cosmopolitan Magazine, yes.
