ArtPrize Dallas has announced that their event planned for spring of 2016 has been cancelled.

ArtPrize says that fundraising goals were not able to be met, but they still hope to host a competition at some time in the future.

“We made tremendous progress in this effort,” said ArtPrize Dallas Executive Director Ariel Saldivar, “and we truly believe that one day our city will be ready for such an inclusive and unique undertaking. There have been many valuable lessons learned along the way, and what we have attempted is nothing short of extraordinary.”

“ArtPrize likes to take risks. Our goal with the ArtPrize Cities program has always been to strengthen and expand the network of artists that will ultimately show at ArtPrize Grand Rapids,” said ArtPrize Grand Rapids Executive Director, Christian Gaines. “For now, we won’t be able to see how ArtPrize Dallas might have served that goal. We are a better organization having attempted it.”

There was also an email from Saldivar which further explained the challenges in getting ArtPrize Dallas off the ground:

Despite the visionary understanding of our supporters, there were a few who saw the concept as threatening to the status quo. The resistance was especially disappointing since ArtPrize Dallas would have had a tremendous, positive economic impact.
