In addition to the ever present early spring skunk stink and the raccoons taking out power transformers, we now have new rodents to bother us. How delightful.

Rodents are out to get us. I'm convinced of that.

I woke up this morning with the pungent stench of skunk perfuming my north east side house. Now, I read that armadillos have been showing up dead on the roads of Ottawa County near Holland. What the hell is happening?

Armadillos have long been a pain in the butt of Texans where they are usually referred to by such ignoble names as 'Road Pizza', 'Texas Turkeys', 'Pocket Dinosaurs' or 'Possums on the Half Shell'.

Last April, when an armadillo showed up dead on a Holland road, authorities sloughed it off to someone's pet who got away. (Who in God's name keeps a pet armadillo in Michigan?).

But this week WOOD-TV 8 has reported that at least two more motorists have documented their road kill as armadilloes near Holland in the past week. So now deputies aren't so sure what's going on.

While the little tanks usually prefer warm, rainy areas like Florida, Texas and Mississippi to live, authorities as far north as Illinois have seen armadilloes existing in the wild. Do we have the bane of the rodent world living in our state?

I sure as hell hope not.
