Andy Grammer Sings ‘Back Home’ In H.O.M.E. at The B.O.B.

Intimate and personal. That's the only way to describe Andy Grammer's for-Channel 95.7-listeners-only concert at The B.O.B. on Wednesday night.

Performing in the ground-floor House of Music and Entertainment (H.O.M.E.), the 30-year-old "Keep Your Head Up" singer-guitarist engaged an audience of just more than 200 people in his first Grand Rapids performance.

The Los Angeles resident, who graduated from high school and attended college in upstate New York, pointed out it was his firstGrand Rapids performance.

He said while he'd previously stopped in Grand Rapids "to speak on radio" and while he "once had a girlfriend from Grand Rapids, ... before I met my wife," he likened the concert to a "first date."

Having been a street performer for four years, he said he found playing in the intimate setting energizing.

"Oh my God," Grammer said. "I love you so much."

Currently on tour, he had performed last month on NBC's "The Today Show" and at Boston's Fenway Park and also appeared earlier this summer in New York's Times Square on ABC's "Good Morning America."

The Grand Rapids stop came before a concert Friday in Searcy, Ark. He's then headed with American Authors for four dates in Australia and New Zealand later this month, before returning to the U.S. to tour with O.A.R. for 19 dates through late November.

The "Keep Your Head Up" singer showcased his acoustic and musical abilities as well as his wit, humor and love for his mother, Kathy Grammer. She died five years ago of breast cancer, and was whom he dedicated his 2011 self-titled debut album to.

The eight songs he performed on guitar during his 40-some-odd minute set were also from his new album, "Magazines or Novels," and a couple cover tunes.

He played before a crowd that ranged from having more than nodding acquaintance with his songs, such as Coopersville sisters Nicole Ferwerda and Nicole Parkel, to diehards like Lori and Bob Hoholik, a Caledonia couple lamenting that their 17-year-old daughter, Kimberly, couldn't join them.

"We were trying to figure out how we were going to see him in Florida when this concert was announced," said Lori Hoholik, who failed calling in for tickets but scored her two seats through Channel 95.7's Facebook page.

Grammer didn't disappoint, with much of the audience singing along throughout, particularly on his songs, but also when he covered Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" and Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars."

He finished strong with "Keep Your Head Up" and "Back Home," before hanging around for about another hour or so for a meet-and-greet gathering.

"Thank you so much 95.7 for playing my songs," the personable Grammer said. "I love you so much."
