9-Year-Old Boy Stabbed By 12-Year-Old In Kentwood Dies

Police are investigating after a 12-year-old boy is accused of stabbing another child Monday evening. The victim, 9-year-old Michael Conner Verkerke, died Tuesday morning. 

The kids were at a playground at Pinebrook Village, a mobile home park in Kentwood.

The 9-year-old victim was stabbed in the back.

Witness Glenn Stacey told WZZM-13 that he was approached by the 12-year-old afterward, and that the boy asked to use his phone.

"I was getting my ladder," Stacey said, "and this young man came and asked me if he could use my phone. I gave him my phone, and I heard him tell the 911 operator, 'I just stabbed someone. Come and get me. I want to die.' It was just a sad situation."

Stacy says that the boy also said that he had taken multiple pills earlier in the day and that nobody loved him.

The suspect was taken into custody and police planned to question him with his parents on-hand.
