6,000 federal prisoners are expected to be released next month nationwide, 83 of those will be in Michigan.

WZZM 13 reports the release of the prisoners comes after an announcement Tuesday from the U.S. Justice Department. The move, due to new federal sentencing policies, will result in saving money and a reduction of overcrowding in federal prisons.

Thousands of nonviolent offenders have been eligible for reduced sentences over the past year, and most of the prisoners have been released into halfway houses or other forms of community corrections.
