#1 Thing On Kids’ Christmas Lists This Year? iPad.

Think back to when you were a kid, what was the top thing on your Christmas list? I’m pretty sure that between the ages of 6 and 12, mine varied, but always included the latest book in whatever series I happened to be reading (Berenstein Bears, Babysitter’s Club, etc.), some form of Nintendo game (which I would inevitably have to share with my brothers), and clothes. I never asked for anything extravagant, because, frankly, I knew I wouldn’t get it.

Turns out that kids these days don’t think the same way. At all. In fact, a friend of mine was telling me yesterday that his 8-year-old thought it was a good idea to put together specific lists for specific family members. Not with suggestions, but with demands as to what he wanted for Christmas. (Needless to say, Dad said no to that one.)

Now, I thought that it was abnormal that my 7-year-old niece owns an iPod touch, her own laptop, and more video game consoles than I can count, but it turns out that she’s in the norm. 44% of kids between the ages of 6 and 12 have an iPad at the top of their Christmas want lists this year, according to a recent Nielsen survey. 44%. Of. Kids. Want. An. iPad.

Hell, I want an iPad, too. But, I’m not going to be asking for one for Christmas. You know why? Because I’m not going to get one for Christmas! I know that kids will ask for things that aren’t possible (I want a pony! I want a puppy! I want a trip to the moon!), but I have a feeling that a lot of kids fully expect to have an iPad under their tree on Christmas morning.

What else are kids asking for this holiday season? Well, after the iPad, there’s an iPod Touch, iPhone, new computer, a (non iPad) tablet computer, Nintendo 3DS and Kinect for Xbox 360.

Is my age showing? Because I’m pretty sure that if I had a kid, and they handed me this list, the first sentence out of my mouth would be “Count your blessings! There are kids in Africa who don’t even know who Spongebob is!”
